 In Yoga

hi yoga etc completing 108 sun salutations for the start of summer!

Summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurred on Wednesday,  June 21  when the sun reached its most northerly point, directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and marked the beginning of summer.  June 21 was also International Day of Yoga and Hi Yoga, Etc celebrated in style and practice.

Our yoga family completed 108 Sun Salutations A, or Surya Namaskar A.  Celebrating International Day of Yoga was a perfect newcomers and yoga veterans, alike.  Bodies were tested and spirits rejuvenated.  As with all Hi Yoga Etc. practices, we enjoyed our time while believing in ourselves and each other.  From number 1 through 108, we placed effort in each asana, all taken one at a time.

As we celebrated the rebirth of summer, we followed our Hi Yoga Etc. principles…

  • We are a modern studio that brings science and tradition into a positive and friendly spirit atmosphere.
  • We welcome everyone, new and experience yoga participants
  • We stretch and strengthen the body while calming the mind and finding the brightness of each day.

As we welcomed summer, we practiced 108 Sun Salutations as the number of 108 is part of the nature we live in.  The number 108 has a meaning for different people.  According to yoga practitioner, Shiva Rea…

“Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Such phenomena have given rise to many examples of ritual significance.

According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marma points, or sacred places of the body.” – Rea, Shiva. “Q&A: What’s So Sacred About the Number 108?”  – Yoga Journal, 13 Nov. 2007. Web. 1 Dec. 2016.

As we honored the bright white light in ourselves and in each other, we welcomed summer one Surya Namaskar at a time. At the end of practice, we all benefited from our great instruction, community, and dedication.  Our members enjoyed mental and physical benefits from the Hi Yoga Etc. practice.

  • More focused
  • More disciplined
  • More resilient
  • More committed to their yoga and betterment
  • Physically stronger
  • More capable
  • More fluidity in movement
  • Better connected to our minds.

It was a rich way to elevate our yoga practice,  boost our mental and physical capacity, and prepare for a summer filled with self-worth and enrichment. We had fun and you can, too.
