Does yoga fight pain? Yes.
Yoga increases strength, increases self-confidence, and your physical health. Do you know what it decreases?
Pain. Yoga decreases pain and there is real scientific research backing up this benefit.
Catherine Bushnell, Ph.D., is scientific director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she oversees a program on the brain’s role in perceiving, modifying, and managing pain. In a press release, Bushnell summed up the findings of her research by saying, “Practicing yoga has the opposite effect on the brain as does chronic pain.”
Turns out Dr. Bushnell’s research regarding the pain management is far from a gray area, it is rooted in gray matter.
Dr. Bushnell said the studies show yoga practitioners have more gray matter than controls in multiple brain regions, including those involved in pain modulation. “Some gray matter increases in yogis correspond to the duration of yoga practice, which suggests there is a causative link between yoga and gray matter increases.”
Harvard Medical School agrees…
A meta-analysis of 17 studies that included more than 1,600 participants concluded that yoga can improve daily function among people with fibromyalgia osteoporosis-related curvature of the spine. Practicing yoga also improved mood and psychosocial well-being.
